“Not long,” Piran said to Idgual, watching the women going into Nall’s chamber.

“What then?” Idgual asked.

“Then Matauc will be chieftain. Is it not unfolding as I told you it would?”

“Yes,” Idgual said. That much was true. With all of the Cornovii at their backs they would have enough men to take on the northern garrisons of the Romans, as long as the Romans did not send reinforcements. And as long as Piran could bring at least some of the Caledones to his banner. He and Idgual had been just short of taking their spears when the last battle with the Romans was fought at Pap of the Mother, the peak that was held to be the breast of the Goddess herself. The boys of the year ahead had gone into the war band, fought and died, and no doubt been carried to Annwn by the Morrigan herself, to feast with the gods, so Piran said, leaving Piran and Idgual to the shame of Roman masters. Privately, Idgual suspected that Piran had no desire to go to the Otherworld just yet but a strong desire to be chieftain, which was not unreasonable.
